On a warm spring day, a woman with her two small children got into a wooden ferry boat to get to the other side of the river. Just as the boatman prepared to leave the dock, a voice came calling from the other side of the gully.
“Wait! Wait for me!”
It was a samurai, waving his arm as he ran, and soon, he too had jumped in.
The boat set off.
The samurai sat with a formidable presence in the middle of the boat, and because the day was so warm and temperate, it wasn't long before he dozed off to sleep. To see such a strong-looking samurai with his intimidating beard, nodding his head up, then down, then up again, caused the children to giggle.
The mother raised a finger to her lips.
“Shhh. Quiet now.”
For what a disaster it would be if they were to anger him! The children grew quiet.
After a while, one of the children reached out a hand and said, “Mummy, please give me some candy.”
“Me too, Mummy,” the other one said as well.
The mother took out a paper bag from the bosom of her kimono, but there was only one piece remaining.
“Give it to me!”
“Give it to me!”
Both children pleaded with their mother.
Not knowing what to do, the mother said, “Be good, children, and wait just a little while longer. I’ll buy you some more once we reach the other side.”
But the children continued to beg.
“Please, Mummy?”
“Please?”
The samurai was now wide awake and watching the pleading children. This frightened the mother, who thought he must be angry at being woken from his nap.
“Hush now,” she said as she tried to quiet them down, but the children would not listen.
Then, the samurai steadily drew his sword and proceeded toward them. The colour drained from the mother’s face, and she hurled herself over her little ones, thinking he meant to kill the children for disturbing his slumber.
“Give me the candy,” the samurai said.
Fearfully, the mother handed him the hard piece of candy.
The samurai held it against the edge of the boat, and with a quick snap!, deftly split it in two with his sword.
“There we are,” he said, sounding pleased, and gave a piece to each child.
Then, returning to his spot, the samurai was soon nodding back to sleep.
春のあたたかい日のこと、わたし舟にふたりの小さな子どもをつれた女の旅人たびびとがのりました。
舟が出ようとすると、
「おオい、ちょっとまってくれ。」
と、どての向こうから手をふりながら、さむらいがひとり走ってきて、舟にとびこみました。
舟は出ました。
さむらいは舟のまん中にどっかりすわっていました。ぽかぽかあたたかいので、そのうちにいねむりをはじめました。
黒いひげをはやして、つよそうなさむらいが、こっくりこっくりするので、子どもたちはおかしくて、ふふふと笑わらいました。
お母さんは口に指をあてて、
「だまっておいで。」
といいました。さむらいがおこってはたいへんだからです。
子どもたちはだまりました。
しばらくするとひとりの子どもが、
「かあちゃん、飴だまちょうだい。」
と手をさしだしました。
すると、もうひとりの子どもも、
「かあちゃん、あたしにも。」
といいました。
お母さんはふところから、紙のふくろをとりだしました。ところが、飴だまはもう一つしかありませんでした。
「あたしにちょうだい。」
「あたしにちょうだい。」
ふたりの子どもは、りょうほうからせがみました。飴だまは一つしかないので、お母さんはこまってしまいました。
「いい子たちだから待っておいで、向こうへついたら買ってあげるからね。」
といってきかせても、子どもたちは、ちょうだいよオ、ちょうだいよオ、とだだをこねました。
いねむりをしていたはずのさむらいは、ぱっちり眼めをあけて、子どもたちがせがむのをみていました。
お母さんはおどろきました。いねむりをじゃまされたので、このおさむらいはおこっているのにちがいない、と思いました。
「おとなしくしておいで。」
と、お母さんは子どもたちをなだめました。
けれど子どもたちはききませんでした。
するとさむらいが、すらりと刀かたなをぬいて、お母さんと子どもたちのまえにやってきました。
お母さんはまっさおになって、子どもたちをかばいました。いねむりのじゃまをした子どもたちを、さむらいがきりころすと思ったのです。
「飴だまを出せ。」
とさむらいはいいました。
お母さんはおそるおそる飴だまをさしだしました。
さむらいはそれを舟のへりにのせ、刀でぱちんと二つにわりました。
そして、
「そオれ。」
とふたりの子どもにわけてやりました。
それから、またもとのところにかえって、こっくりこっくりねむりはじめました。
